Once upon a time it all made sense. I knew where I was headed and how to get there. I knew who I loved and exactly why I did. I acted my age and didn't all at once. Mistakes were a thing of the past and I had learned my lessons of love, ambition and courage. Smiles were easy and carefree and I wasn't fighting to get back the friends I had lost. I didn't need anyone's approval to find my worth once upon a time. I wasn't afraid. I wasn't lost. I was safe and comfortable with the state of things... when this all was I don't know. But there must've been a time when life wasn't as complicated, when the things inside my head and heart connected. When following my heart was the easiest and greatest decision I could make. But now... not anymore. And I find myself struggling. Stuck. Lost. Stuck in a space I don't know. I find myself longing for something tangible, familiar and everything and everyone who is that to me isn't around. And the ones that are are all I've got. It's a strange place my heart is in.
I got back from rehearsal exhausted last night. Singing for three hours does horrors to an untrained voice I came to find out. I staggered into my room and flopped onto my couch. I looked up and a message was waiting for me from a lost heart. A heart I used to feel at home beside. One I haven't heard from in months. My smile slowly came and did not leave my face. I put my coat back on and stepped out into the night. I opened my mailbox and removed its contents. Slowly I slid to the floor and sat leaning against identitical, cold metal boxes with only tiny black numbers making them unique. I untied the green ribbon to find a shirt. The note was scrawled in a familiar hand, one I know. One that comforted me the moment I saw my name written on the front. My full name. Even my confirmation name was accounted for. I held the shirt. Squeezed it. Tangible, familiar. I sighed, smiled and a tear silently hit the cold tile floor. Silhouettes of memories drifted through my memory and I sat there for ten minutes. Relieved. I walked home and hardly felt the cold. Last night when I disappeared beneath my comforter I was covered in a feeling I haven't felt in a long, long time. A feeling of.. sincere stability.
I have found my favorite poet. It was actually mainly an accident. Rilke was referenced in a book I read over Christmas break. I was struck by the simple phrase that was referenced. In German it read beautifully "Every angel is terrifying." I was intrigued. It struck me deep within. I located the rest of Rilke's work in the original German and the English translation. It embraced me. I feel like in mentioning it, I'm revealing a deep soul secret of mine. I feel like Rilke and I are bonded. Like revealing it to you is like giving myself away. I love the way the Duino Elegies capture me. I've become an addict. And I'm so lucky I found this work when I did. I really need it now. How nice it is to need literature. That it's almost a companion in the dark, lonely night.

Ein jeder Engel in schrecklich. - Rilke
I can hardly contain my sincere excitement, giddiness and overall feeling of disbelief...
I will be playing Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret.
Please come. If you ever come see me in a show.. This one is it. The cast is just amazing, the crew is brilliant and the director has such great ideas. I'm honestly having trouble sitting still at the thought of it.
*CABARET*
Albion College Players
February 23 - 26, 2005
Curtain: 8pm
at the Herrick Theater
"Leave your troubles outside. So-- life is disappointing? In here, life is beautiful."
So after that little announcement, back to life as it is. Life as it is is.. well.. really good. I just got back from Illinois and ACTF was a great time. I learned a lot, saw a bunch of shows and got to spend some quality time with the theater people. A list of memories and key moments to follow.
Auditions for the musical went well (better than well it seems) and it's going to be awesome to act with Andy and Mike one last time before they journey on to bigger and better things.. And as I mentioned the entire cast is amazing, great people.. and sooo talented. This show is just going to be.. wow. Can't say enough. Just come. Very seldom do I know right off the bat after the first read through that a show will simply knock some serious socks off, but this one... I mean, have you heard Andy Groggel hit a G??? you really should, it's pretty sweet!!
I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. It feels like I came back from break for the second time. There's still a lot of people I haven't seen yet, people still noticing my hair for the first time. Opened the house for the first time this semester this morning. It was slow, but really nice. Jordan, Amy and Spencer are all volunteering for me this semester and I have a feeling I'll be having some pretty kick ass tuesday mornings. You should stop in. :)
I got to hang out with Chad yesterday on the day I had off for MLK. He stopped by Albion on his way to PA for his second semester of Med School. Albion just isn't the same without him and it was so good to finally catch up with him. He's rather unhappy at school. It's difficult (obviously) and his friends just aren't like Albion people he said. It scares me a bit. What's going to become of all of us when we leave this place we've grown so accustomed to calling home?
Again.. it's so good to be back. :)
Okay that's about it, so here's da list of sillyness...
ACTF Memories January 2005
-The ride down. Kent, Katie, Mike, Andy and I singing our hearts out to power ballads and just having a really good time. The five hours on the road flew by.
- The Ramada Fun Dome. Just as we left it last year.
- The co-ed room that turned into the party room every night somehow.
- Cramming 20 people into one room to watch the entire 1st season of Arrested Development on our down time.
- The first night after the cast list was announced for Cabaret. Just hanging out with everyone, sharing a drink, celebrating, really genuinely enjoying each other.
- Getting closer with Katie Aumann. I'm really glad for that.
- Spooning with Miss Wingo. And her and I representing for the females in the co-ed room.
- Mike and Kent reciting movie quotes until we all fell asleep and laughing to themselves.
- Mike and Kent's jokes. Ew. Ew. Ew.
- Gerry and Jason going to the adult superstore and Gerry buying a pair of penis glasses. And proceeding to wear them everytime we went out.
- Sitting at the bar at Lonestar talking to Andy about the future. We seldom have talks like that anymore, it was really nice.
- Ryan compititions. How mostof us got DQed for going over time. Steve and I barely made time and I was really happy with our scene. Even though (as always) none of us moved to semi finals.
- Stud Ducks and Horny Toads. What a great play. And the grandpa that came over to our room for a beer who the girls though was really cute. "I don't want any rabbit food! I want something that's going to make a turd!"
- "Cream CHEESE!"
- The 63 degree summer for the first day, the huge thunderstorm, and the BLIZZARD and 15 degree weather that followed for the rest of the week.
- "Jimtopia... did you lose your shoe?"
- Bowling. And Andy peeing his pants. I mean, spilling beer on them.
- Team Kentaren.
- That last horrificly terrible musical we all went to together. And all walked out on during intermission after Starko accidently "shh"ed the entire auditorium suggesting we leave this God awful show and get ice cream. HA!
- "Tell him!... I have caaaa-nnnn--cer!"
- "Dear Bohne: I have cancer. :( *musical notes* Love, Andy"
- Jumping on the beds with Howie.
- Getting hit on at my Alexander workshop and laughing at the guy who said as he was giving me his card, "don't laugh at me!"
- my Alexander workshop... amazing. Learned so much!
- Jordan, my theater boyfriend :)
- Waking up to Andy's damn siren or rooster.
- The cold showers in the morning.
- Throwing a paper airplane of the program over the balcony.
- tap tap tap. "Ouse-keyping!!!"
- Slipping and sliding on the ice rink that was the parking lot.
- Sharing time with my dear dear friends.. it was a great trip guys! Glad I could be with you more than I was last year. It was so worth it! all my *love*

It’s been quite a while, dearest. A year if you look at it chronologically. This is my first admittance since the New Year echoed through the snow covered park on that little bridge by the lake… Greetings comrades and welcome 2005. Hope it’s as good a year as the last and if I may be so bold to ask for even better.. as I know for a fact it will be.
I began this past year in apprehension and ended it somehow mixed between bliss and regret. But regrets are not for us, comrades. For we are the people of no regrets, the ones that insist life is to be lived passionately. Thankfully I am not alone in this hopeful, sometimes reckless way of life.
Okay, my preamble’s over, sorry about that. Just thought after not posting for a really long time I should say something bold, worthwhile. Even though all of that may’ve just been garbage, it felt like importance when I heard my head speaking it. I survived finals relatively unscathed, although it was noticeably apparent that we all needed a break. If not from school, work and stress, from each other. I mean, some people I was beginning to be so short tempered with and I could tell I too was annoying more than one person. We were picking up swords against each other, it was time to part for a few weeks.
I arrived home with a pleasant sense of accomplishment. One more semester taken care of and I felt I did well, I was proud of my work. And it really was good to move back into my room for longer than a day or two. I almost forgot what it was like spending that much time with my family. I haven’t been home for longer than a week in…well, a year and a half. It was nice, I actually felt a part of the family again as opposed to just a visitor. My sister and I felt slightly more distant than usual which had me a little worried, but the more time I was home the better it got. I reveled in the little pleasures of sleeping in, reading a book, playing with my dog and subjecting myself to crappy made-for-tv movie marathons.. it was really nice. Finally I was catching my breath.
Christmas was beautiful and really nice. My brother for home the day before Christmas Eve and I willingly picked him up from the airport. The feeling of seeing him doesn’t get any less intense each time I do. That’s what happens when you love someone in the military I guess. You’re always worried each time you see them and have to say goodbye that it may be the last time. I hate that feeling of not knowing. But seeing him, put all my fears to rest :). Even if only for a week. And he didn’t recognize me at the airport because of my new hair cut. He along with many others hated it, missed the comfortable ‘old me.’ “Too bad,” I said to him haughtily, “You’ll just have to learn to love me again huh?” The six of us slept in the same house again. It gave me a similar feeling as it did last year, that of comfort, security in an uncertain, cold world. And having my siblings around showing affection in their own little ways, it was perfect. The rest of my extended family came in from Cali for Christmas Eve as did Ron’s girlfriend Natalie. She and I kept in touch while Ron was in Iraq, the connection made us feel closer to him. We have since fallen out of that connection, but I was still really anxious to meet this girl my brother loved. She is beautiful, kind, spirited. She fits in really well with the family and my mom nearly cried she loved her so much. I wouldn’t be surprised if I knew her as a sister in a little over a year’s time. Good for my brother, he needed a girl like her. And the overprotective sister in me actually approves. Fancy that!
Christmas was much more adult than it ever has been for me. No hysterical laughter over nonalcoholic wine and cramming into the car to take the cousins back home after an evening of silliness. We still coined the term Santa, but only laughed quietly over our cocktails at dinner. I felt old. It was strange. My mother cried when she opened the gift for our parents from ‘the kids.’ Her tears were explosive and beautiful.. she said quietly as she hugged and kissed each one of us was that the real gift was having each of us at home, alive and well. I locked eyes with my brother across the room and saw his military eyes turn slightly glassy. She couldn’t have put it better. The presents were wonderful, full of love, but the people and the time spent together was the best part.. Perhaps I am grown up after all.
I spent a rallying amount of time with Kathie and Paul over break. We sat around, talked, worked out, watched football, went to the Piano Bar (“Check out this guy with two chicks! His girlfriend and his mistress!”). It was nice being around those two. Makes me miss backpacking with them. I really hope I can go with them again this summer despite my brief jaunt to London. Speaking of London, nearly done with all applications, essays, and resumes dealing with it. Now it’s just a matter of running about collecting the last few signatures and letters of recommendation. I’m just relieved it’s almost there, I can taste it. But I’m scared shitless. Everytime I even think about London in the broadest sense, being there for 8 weeks, I have to change the subject in my head lest I wet myself.
Speaking of wetting myself, I audition for Cabaret tomorrow. Talk about scary. Haven’t been in a musical since high school, but I have an odd good feeling about it. I may actually have a chance. *shrugs* But good feelings are usually bad signs, so I’ve resigned myself to just go in there, dance my pants off, sing my heart out and have a good time. Screw it, whatever happens happens. Same thing with ACTF. I’m not out to win, but I’m excited it’s finally me out there on display. I finally got a Ryan nomination. Never thought it’d be me.
This break I got closer. Some people I thought I had lost forever reappeared in unusual ways. I drank coffee with a person who was once one of the closest things to me and as he smiled at me across the table, I realized he was a person of value to me. And now, after a simple coffee and short discussion about hopes and fears, we are friends. And perhaps someday on a rainy street in New York, we can stand beneath an awning and laugh about how we actually lived out the dreams we thought were just… dreams.
Ben was my buddy for most of break. He and I cavorted, plotted, had an all around good time together. We remembered high school, track season and he told me about his new security in the job he’s sure to master. We went to Jill’s and visited with little Hannah and Jill graced the group with a plethora of embarrassing stories about me from high school. I turned a shade of crimson I seldom reach and Ben laughed so hard he almost choked. It was surprisingly fun, even if the entertainment was at my expense.
I sat beside Kurt on my couch staring out my front window in the dark the night before he left to go back to school. I hadn’t seen or talked to him really since the summer. We talked awkwardly at first, then apologies poured out like tears and soon we were laughing and grinning like we used to. Here’s hoping this time our friendship won’t fall to pieces… for the tenth time. It’s actually kinda funny to think about. I’m glad Lyric’s there taking care of him.
I had a rather amazing New Years despite a lack of plans. It wasn’t gaudy or spectacular. It was quiet and unassuming. The way love should be.
The week following New Years passed in a heartbeat and here I am. Back at school, back to real life as it were. I’m actually glad to be back. I missed this old house, the voices inside it, the caffeine. I learned a lot this break about relationships, communicating, friendship and what it means to listen. I learned a lot last year. And here’s to another full of laughter, tears, passion… *lifts glass and smiles softly in hope of the year awaiting all of us*
