Lately my dreams have been so real and my life has been so much like a dream I've had some serious trouble deciphering which is which.
In an attempt to avoid work (and the sometimes sad thing that is life for that matter)... I took one of those great online quizes...
What kind of girl are you?
http://www.cookingtohookup.com/quiz/forguys.php
I'm an Indie Girl. (c'mon, really surprised about that shit?)
It's no good pretending that any relationship has a future if your record collections disagree violently or if your favorite films wouldn't even speak to each other if they met at a party. -- Nick Hornby, High Fidelity
An Indie Girl's life is a Statement with a capital S, but unlike the Granola Girl, the statement is not political -- it's artistic. Indie Girls consider themselves actresses in the movie of life. Your meal needs to be constructed like an independent film. If you're bringing her over for a date, you are playing a character in her movie. If you create a setting, props, and a soundtrack that are good enough to avoid the cutting-room floor, she's yours.
You can boil the Indie Girl down to two words: cultural literacy. Or how about these two: media consumption. As the Gourmet Girl loves food and all that goes with it, the Indie Girl loves media: books, movies, music, and art. The good news is you don't have to be rich, good-looking, or famous to win this girl's heart. The bad news is she will judge you based on your music choices, the books you read, and the films you watch.

Mystery creates a sexy sense of illusion
We are turned on by what is real
-the silent years-
Reverie: Part II... *smiles*
Though I dreaded it and hated being stuck in the steaming hot basement of Mudd studying for Geo Hazards on Sunday night, I tried so hard to enjoy it. Revel in every moment. Next year, those are the things I’ll probably miss most. Studying with Andy and laughing at our sad and often screwed up relational states. Soon those people will all be gone. People I’ve grown up beside. People I’ve known from the moment I got here and those I just had the courage to talk to for the first time yesterday. The people that saw me when I was immature and anxious to impress and watched me change into the woman I’ve become. People I’ve tucked into bed at night with a story and who would cross campus just to give me a hug at 3am. The people I’ve spent entire nights awake talking with and laughing beside. And the ones who have held me close as I cried for hours about something inconsequential. Or something not so inconsequential. People like Andy. People like Mike Bohne. People like Ian. People like Amber, Jessica, and Jaime. People I can’t imagine being here without. People who set the bar. I can’t be the oldest, I’m no example. And Albion without them is a scary and lonely place.
The Euphonics concert last Wednesday was a huge reminder of such things. But it was a happy one. Bittersweet. They were amazing like always and I screamed my lungs out like always. This official Euphonics Groupie (or “Euphies” as Mike pointed out, followed by a very smarmy Tobias from Arrested Development-esque grin) was having problems keeping from busting out into standing ovation after every song. Bohne sang his heart out, dear Kent made me smile and I cheered my pants off for Sarah. As always, being in that audience made me feel like I was a part of something. That I knew every person on that stage and I was so proud of my friends. So very proud.
“The girl I dated would not have had the guts to go to London. You are not that girl. You are confident, funny and witty. And you drive me nuts…” said John with a smile from across the backroom of the coffeehouse as light poured in from the afternoon sun. I smiled back. Quite possibly the best compliment I’ve gotten in a long time. I’d like to think I’m not that girl. I hate that girl. The person I was when I first got here. She was immature, naïve, and eager to impress. Even if it meant adjusting who she was to fit in. She let people push her around and she was severely attached to others. She wasn’t realistic. But me, I’m not that. If someone doesn’t like me now, I’m not afraid to tell them to fuck off (literally). I’m a lot more laid back and confident. I’m not afraid to make jokes and show a side of me I used to be too afraid to show three years ago. I’m glad that people are noticing. :) Thank you, John P. And thank you for the great afternoon of conversation and memories. To the max *gang sign* I hope you find what it is you want in the big world. And know that I’m proud of you. And I’ll get to Chicago to see a show, even if I have to hitchhike to get there.
It's wild. Just getting the last bits and pieces in order for London. Immunizations and insurance, etc. It’s so close now. A month and I’m on my way there. Getting on a plane not knowing when I’m coming back. I’m frightened and exhilerated. Only a few more things to arrange and I’m on my way… wow.
Thursday morning I woke up in the early morning light after a night of very little sleep. I put clothes on, a ribbon in my hair and stepped out into the cool morning air. I made my way to Bobbit. I sat quietly in the auditorium and watched a face from the past present his thesis work. The whole day I watched those I’ve known, those I’ve just met, those I remember vividly present the work they have been slaving over all year. Bravo to the one with the sax :). My housemates shined beautifully and even thanked me in their acknowledgements. I heart you, Jaime. And I’m so proud of everyone. It’s so amazing to think of how lucky I am to have such brilliant scholors in my midst. Congrats to everyone who wrote a thesis and presented. That’s some crazy motivation you’ve got.
My parents came in on Thursday for the Honors Convocation. I was only getting honored for one thing, but they were still there. And my mom was taking photos like it was kindergarten graduation. We went out to lunch at our usual Café in Marshall. My dad sat quietly and nodded in agreement as my mom looked at me and told me she had something important to tell me. Tears began to form in her eyes as she said, “We are so proud of you. Of the confident, independent woman you’ve become. It’s so hard to imagine the youngest growing up. But you’ve done so beautifully. I look into your eyes and I still see that little girl who slept next to my bed and refused to leave my side. Now look at you… You’re conquering the world.” At this point she broke down and my father took her hand in his and smiled weakly at me. I blinked, fighting back my own tears. I thanked them. But words will never be enough. They’ve done so much for me. And I thanked them for my siblings who have set me a shining example and are my best friends (by the way, i talked to each of them that day). Without my family, I would’ve lost the battle a long time ago. They’ve got me through it. My confidence, all of my accomplishments are theirs. I would be nothing without them. And I’m so very lucky.
I didn’t sleep at all last night. The sun didn’t exactly rise and it was definitely snowing this morning. What’s up with that? Lots of thoughts and ideas and slight insanity. *shrugs* I’m still trying to piece together exactly what happened there…
YOU’RE A TOWEL!
Me: we're kind of ridiculous
MJ: sure....like someone can be kind of pregnant or kind of dead
Me: ha. agreed.
Last night was grand. Last bands of the year, Lazy Sunday and Chris Bathgate. They are so talented, it amazes me. I’m also $20 more in debt because I bought cds from both bands. Kind of a last ditch effort to hold onto the memories I’ve made here. Lazy Sunday improvised a song about the Coffeehouse because they love playing here so much. One line struck me and made a tear fall down my face onto the old carpet.
“I saw the sign again.
It was a little bit broken.
Broken like I was
The day I walked
In that familiar door the first time.
But look at me now.”
Broken like I was… But look at me now.

Reverie: Part I
Quietly, I am in reverie. I’ve been in a phenomenal mood throughout the past week against all odds. I wouldn’t let it get me down. My lack of sleep and reasons to be upset all seemed inconsequential when I looked at the world around me. The things that I’ve been lucky enough to experience. It’s really. Hard to describe.
Letting go is the hardest part. Or so I’ve been told. As I clutched Stephanie and Andy in a fit of tears last Friday, this was made extremely apparent. Letting go of Jessie was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in a long time. She just exemplified what it meant to live life to the fullest. And “Jessie’s Gift” will continue to touch the lives of young people all over Michigan and hopefully the entire nation someday. She was a shining example of how life should be lived. She was the ultimate “It should have been me instead of her” situation. But she wouldn’t want that. She would’ve gladly left the earth to save all of us and change the world. And I’m confident that is exactly what she did. I thought it might be easier. Since I’ve done this so much lately.. let go of people I loved. But just as I said I didn’t want to wallow and be overwhelmed about it like I had before, I burst into a fit of uncontrollable tears and soaked the nearest shoulder I could cry into. After the funeral, Andy, Steph and I did exactly what Jessie would’ve done. We went to the Eat Shop and each ordered a double bacon cheeseburger with French fries. And we laughed together… And that’s really been the best way I’ve found to cope. Let go of petty problems and love the ones you’re with. And allow yourself to be overcome with joy and laughter. Smile. All the freaking time. Till your cheeks hurt…Hers is the smile I wear today. I won’t be able to thank Jessie for the gift she’s given me, but I can smile. I owe her at least that.
Jessie worked another miracle. Alisha and I attended the funeral separately and throughout it, I wished I could have her to help me through it. As soon as it was done, she and I met on the quad. We just hugged. Nothing was said. We didn’t need to say anything. We just smiled and launched into the stories from the weeks we had missed. Real friends almost don’t even need apologies. They know. It’s simply understood. Love leaves room for mistakes.
That night the coffeehouse had its last big band night of the year. An air of sadness was floating around, but for the most part everyone was just excited and happy to be here. I don’t know where the year has gone. And it’s most apparent in matters relating to the house. The five of us girls clung together that night like we were afraid if we lost sight (more accurately, grasp) of each other, we would lose each other forever. We danced and sang along to the familiar tunes of our two favorite C-house bands, Ten Words for Snow and the Silent Years. We’ve started to train our new managers for next year and it’s so strange to see them bumbling around the kitchen, afraid to screw up. Just like I was. I was so anal about everything at first. I wanted to prove that the managers previous had made the right choice in my living here. It’s just ironically adorable to see the new managers doing the exact same thing. This house… I swear.
Buffet Bash this year was certainly a force to be reckoned with this year. More so than any year previous. It was like everyone had so many things to do, but they dropped it all for one day. I feel like people have been made so aware of the brevity of life and the importance to enjoy as much of life as possible that people couldn’t help it. Saturday was the day. Alisha and I set up a blanket on the outskirts of the porch and began sunning ourselves in the mid afternoon sun. Before we could start to feel a little out of the loop, Lauren and Amy W. came and sat on the blanket with us and we all began to chat and laugh together. Pete and Nick’s band set up in the sand right in front of the house and there was live, beachy music all day long (cute side story: Nick had come to the house at 10 that morning and asked to borrow our sound system with a devilish grin. I grinned back and said “As long as I’m invited.” He laughed, “Of course!”). Many alums returned and ran to me with open arms. I threw the football around with Ryan (and got thrown over his shoulder) and reminisced about past buffet insanity with Kris. I’ll never forget sitting on Trevor’s tailgate, talking serious, the smell of cigar heavy in the summer air and trying to convince Amy to make out with me *shakes head and laughs*. Poor Amy and Pete, that’s kind of become a force of habit. I played in the waterfall more than once (in my bathing suit and later with all my clothes on), danced in the sand and breathed life in fully with a happy grin. I was there from 3pm – 10:30pm, never leaving once. At 10ish, I returned to the house soaking wet with a smile. I changed into pjs and watched/participated in open mic night. I’m going to miss coming home to events like that. Chilling out with friends at the end of a long day, everything relaxed and perfect. It was an all together grand weekend indeed.
Heads up Fiske, trouble is on the way...;) Fiske Room 100: Jill and Rose, Punk Ass Bitch Headquarters. “Hey would you mind putting your beer down and coming to a house meeting?” *Jill and I glance at each other and reply in unison* “Um. Fuck no.” *smiles innocently*

She came to us and changed our lives...
Her smile will never leave me... in fact it is the smile I have today.
She sent us sunshine to ease our pain.
Her beauty was unique and timeless. She gave us so much....
Rest peacefully Jessie Longhurst. We will always love you. Just as you loved each of us with your whole heart.

“I don’t mind spending every day
Out on your corner in the pouring rain.”
Is it bad that I already know I won’t want to come home? London, Summer 2005. I’ve been attending a plethora of study abroad meetings lately to get information and start to prepare myself for the summer. And through all of it, each moment I get more excited. I was really scared to think about it a month ago. But when I think about it now.. I get chills. The best kind of chills. Those shivers you get when you’re in love. Those are the shivers I get when I think about London. About calling it my home for 8 weeks. I can’t fathom that in a little over a month’s time, I’ll be getting on a plane all by myself with my prize possessions in a backpack and just leaving America behind. Flying to London. It’s crazy because I know that I will love it. I just know that I will fit in there. I know that I will make lasting relationships there, that I may possibly feel more at home there than I have anywhere else. I’m been researching it, I’ve been gazing on photo after photo. I’m buying a one way ticket so I can stay long after my program is over. So I can explore, travel, see as much of Europe as I can. And who knows… maybe I just won’t come home. My sister left me a message that said “I bet you won’t come home.” I was a little hurt, afraid she meant that I left my home with her carelessly too often. She called me and said otherwise. She said I was the type of person to stay in Europe. That of the four of us, I was the one she could see moving away, seeing the world and never once being afraid of it, never once looking back. Is that the woman I’ve grown up to be?... I think somehow that’s the girl I always was.
Jill smiled at me across my dimly lit room. “Are you.. serious? Karen, I love you. Really. You just took away all of my problems.” She rushed over to me and hugged me in a way she never has before. Her quiet sincerity hit me deep. I went from a form of hurt I hadn’t felt before to feeling really good. Like my presence would really mean something in someone’s life. That living with me was a gift to her. I was a gift to someone. I won’t go into the details. There are far too many. I felt happiness and pain at the same time when Jill hugged me. A confliction of emotion I seldom feel. I had been left behind. Accidentally or on purpose, that’s no matter. My senior year was slowly unraveling and I was powerless to stop it. But now I see it clearly. And it won’t be as bad as I thought. To be honest, I think it’s going to be great. Jill and I sat out on the roof that night and smiled. This was going to be a good pair. We were different enough to fit. We laugh a lot. We respect each other. And this year we’ve really grown to care for each other. And as long as you’ve got that, you’re set.
The workshop shows were surprising. And very good. It was sad to see Mike onstage for the last time and part of me did wish I was beside him. But part of me was glad too. We had Cabaret. And that is the way I will always remember being onstage with Mike. Dan did an excellent job in his second college theater experience. He really embraced his role and even scared me with his strength and power. I found my self very proud of him. He did well. He worked hard and it showed. And there is definitely some real talent there if he has the courage to cultivate it. All in all I was happy to be a spectator this time. Sometimes I like seeing theater from the audience instead of from the stage.
Speaking of great theater, I also made it out to Lansing with my mom on Friday night to see the final preview of A Comedy of Errors at the Boar’s Head. It was set in modern day on a beach and the acting was phenomenal. Definitely a professional show. Bobby was making his professional debut and earning equity points, so it would’ve taken a near death experience to keep me from seeing it. He left my mom and me laughing and I was shocked at his commitment to the role and strong character choices. But I never would’ve expected any less from him. After the show, I went out with the cast to their local bar and got to have my first SCHOOPA (?) of beer. Now this schoopa is not something to be messed with. It’s like a giant bowl of beer. You have to hold the thing with two hands to drink it. Wild. The cast was friendly and hilarious (as casts often are). We joked around about theater and Chewbacca (yeah, you had to be there) late into the night and Bobby bragged to his buds about Cabaret and Twelfth Night until I turned about as red as I’ve been in quite a while. After the bar, we got to spend a great evening catching up which including me banging on Max and Crystal’s door. I missed Maxilicious. :P My little escape to Lansing was just what I needed after a long, busy week.
Amy Lewis. What a doll. I got to spend a long evening of silliness with her and Sarah Wingo (oh, she’s hot). It was the night of cast parties and alumni here at Albion and Amy was dead set on reconnecting with her long lost friends. She, Sarah and I spent the night giggling about boys, theater, and recent events of happiness/woe. It was a great night of reflection and great theater fun. I don’t have many nights like that anymore. I also ran into a very schnockered Andy which made me laugh and John Steeno broke my curtain rod (?). It was a very random night but I got to catch up with the theater crew I used to be so connected to. It made me really miss Laura Kraly though. *dark side love* I wanted to call you dear, but Amy insisted we weren’t drunk enough yet. And then we sorta plum forgot. Go figure ;).
Denny’s on Sunday was glorious with Amy, John, Jim, Sarah, and Andy. Andy was hung over and in need of serious coffee. We all chatted, gossiped, laughed, made up songs, ripped on each other.. ohhh the Denny’s memories, it was great. It was absolutely gorgeous outside and John and I checked out the infamous Concord UFO (no, really there’s a UFO there. You should go see it. It’s all decked out in Christmas lights. ‘Tis the season, dontcha know.).
Despite the lack of sleep that ensued due to heavy procrastination it was a pretty relaxing weekend. Just holding out one more night… Tomorrow I take on Windsor for year number 2. My delt sigs and I are heading to Windsor tomorrow at 1pm and we’re setting up camp at Patrick O’Ryan’s. Haha, Ian and I will most likely be there for most of the weekend, hanging at the bar. Him reminiscing about Albion and prophesizing what will become of him. Me, in my cute black strapless number crying in my Guinness about the events of the past weeks and discussing my affairs of the heart. It’s going to be a great weekend. It’s going to be a riot like it always is. And it’ll be an escape with some of the people I care about most at this stupid school. One last hurrah with my senior dudes. Kris is even coming as Jas’ date (HA!) so it’ll be the reunion of la familia and their favorite sweetheart will be there to share it with them. Hangin’ on just a few more hours and I’ll be there. :)
So for serious.. I think I’m going to start going by the name Rose. For real. Call me Rose.
